History
The techniques known as Ju-Jitsu or Jiu Jitsu (two different spellings meaning the same martial art) were developed in Japan, some techniques dating back to over 2000 years ago. The words "Jiu-Jitsu" translate into English as "the art of softness" or "way of yielding".
Jiu Jitsu was developed by the Samurai warriors of Feudal Japan and evolved into a formidable art of self defence. Due to the difficulty encountered when attacked by an armored opponent, techniques were developed for neutralizing the attacker using joint lock throws and pins. The guiding principle when applying techniques is that an opponents energy should be used against him rather than directly opposing it.
The modern art of Jiu Jitsu is practiced now as it was hundreds of years ago. It is an excellent way to stay in shape and keep both mind and body active.
When to start?
It is never too late to start Jiu Jitsu. Children can start from 5 years old and learn from the very start how to defend themselves when attacked and the martial art practice installs a sense of self discipline by teaching the strict codes of Jiu Jitsu. The student learns from the outset, how to fall safely and protect the vital parts of the body from injury.
